1878

1878 Six young men launch The Hindu as an eight-page weekly in Madras. It was edited by G. Subramania Aiyer.

1883

The Hindu becomes a tri-weekly, published on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It moves to 100 Mount Road, its first home.

1889

It starts publishing six days a week, barring Sundays.

1905

The Hindu, with a circulation of 800 copies, is bought by S. Kasturiranga Iyengar. He turns around its financial fortunes.

1923

The Hindu becomes the first newspaper to acquire a rotary press; Kasturiranga Iyengar passes away in December.

1925

Mahatma Gandhi unveils a portrait of Kasturiranga Iyengar in The Hindu’s office.

1933

Offices are opened in London, Bombay and Calcutta

1934

Kasturi Srinivasan becomes the paper’s Editor. He was the founder-chairman of the Press Trust of India and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956.

1936

The Hindu Illustrated Weekly, a Sunday paper in broadsheet format, is launched.

1939

Acquires all-India rights to carry material published in The Times, the Manchester Guardian and others. A first for an Indian newspaper.

1939

Moves to its existing headquarters on Mount Road. Becomes the first Indian newspaper to have a P&T teleprinter link.

1940

Transforms itself into a morning daily. Begins using spot colour on its pages.

1947

Starts transportation of copies to other cities by air. Sport & Pastime, a weekly sports magazine which also featured entertainment, is launched.

1959

Kasturi and Sons Ltd is registered and becomes an unlisted public limited company.

1963

Becomes the first Indian newspaper to acquire a Heron aircraft for the supply of papers to other cities in Madras and Mysore States. In the following year, the company acquires Dakotas to supply newspapers to Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

1965

The Times (of London) rates The Hindu as one of world’s 10 best newspapers, calling it “a national voice with a southern accent”. G. Kasturi, who went on to become the paper’s longest serving editor, is appointed in August.

1968

The Hindu is honoured with the World Press Achievement Award.

1970

The Bangalore edition is launched, the first outside of Madras State.

1986

The Delhi edition is launched. Pages are transmitted from Madras via satellite.

1994

The Hindu BusinessLine is launched.

1995

The Hindu becomes the first Indian newspaper to have an Internet edition.

2005

Undergoes a comprehensive redesign by the renowned Mario Garcia.

2006

The first Readers’ Editor is appointed. The Hindu e-paper is launched.

2013

The Hindu Centre for Politics and Public Policy is launched.

2015

The Mumbai edition of The Hindu is launched.

2016

thehindu.com, recently redesigned, wins Gold for the best news website at WAN-IFRA’s South Asian Digital Media Awards.

2017

The newspaper is relaunched with an expanded offering on Sunday.

2018

The Hindu launches Briefcase, a paid app.
